11.30.06 | Israeli Songwriter Eli Mohar Dies at 58
Songwriter and journalist Eli Mohar died today at the age of 58, of cancer.

Mohar, considered one of Israel's best songwriters, was best known as the veteran columnist in the Tel Aviv weekly Ha'ir, which published his weekly column "Goings on Around Town."

Mohar was born in Tel Aviv in 1948 to Adina and Yehiel Mohar, a well-known songwriter.

He graduated from A.D. Gordon school and "Tichon Hadash" and was a member of the Mahanot Olim youth movement.

Mohar served in the Israel Defense Forces Nahal paratroopers' Regiment 50 and took part in the Six-Day War, the War of Attrition and the Yom Kippur War.

He wrote for Bemahane, Davar and Ha'ir, and until recently published two regular columns in Ha'ir  "Goings on Around Town" and "Basha'ar," (at the goal post) about football. A longtime Hapoel Tel Aviv fans, he penned the song "They told him," which is performed by Arik Einstein, about the team.

Mohar, who recently moved from Tel Aviv to Azur, was married for the second time and was a father to Sharon and a grandfather of three.

He collaborated with composer Yoni Rechter on two albums, and the two also used to perform together. In the mid-'90s he published a collection of poems.

Mohar wrote three books (including "Goings on Around Town" and "Company C Platoon 3" with David Tartakover) and a biographical album with Arik Einstein entitled "It's the Same Love."

Mohar's funeral will be held on Sunday.

The diva of Israeli popular song died today at the age of 83. She released he first album in 1948, and in 1988 she became an Israel Prize Laureate. Her funeral will be held on Friday in Tel Aviv.

Shira NYC's tribute to Ehud Manor, held June 28,2005, brought 250 Israelis together to remember Israel's most prolific songwriter. General Consul of Israel in New York Arye Mekel kicked off the evening with personal words about Manor. Many guest singers performed on stage, including Ron Eliran, who recorded the first song that Manor wrote with Nurit Hirsh. Shira NYC has been busy booking this tribute performance in many communities across the USA.

Completing an East Coast tour in NY, Boston and NJ with the Shira NYC band, Miki Gavrielov returned to Israel yesterday. Miki was touched by the warm welcome he received by the Israeli communities, especially as the audience sang along to every song and would not let him leave the stage. Over 100 close friends and family came to celebrate Ron Eliran's birthday with the singer songwriter who hosted a party at Bnai Zion on December 19th. Ron, a frequent guest at Shira NYC's Makor shows, organized a whole night's worth of performances, including Samir Shukri, Yoel Sharabi, Shmulik Ackerman, Avraham Gothbard, and our own Yoav Polachek, Mattan Klein and Lilach Koch. Notable musician guests at the party included Yaron Gershovsky and Yeruslav Yakubovich. Rivka Michaeli, an old friend, surprised Ron and attended the party as well.

06.26.04 | Legendary Songwriter Naomi Shemer Dies
Song writer and composer Naomi Shemer, 74, died at Tel Aviv's Ichilov Hospital after a long illness. Shemer, who won the Israel Prize, was one of the most important Hebrew songwriters since the founding of the state - many of the hundreds of songs she wrote formed the very bedrock of Israeli culture.
